Central Albertans have improved access to surgical services with the recruitment of five new anesthesiologists in Red Deer.
Dr. Radhey Alsenosy, Dr. Pireshin Ramdharee, Dr. Gary Simpson, Dr. Theo Endemann and Dr. Charlene Hendricks-Bouwer have all recently joined the anesthesia team at Red Deer Regional Health Centre.
“We are excited to welcome these exceptional specialist physicians to our local care team,” says Adriana LaGrange, minister of primary and preventative health services and Red Deer-North MLA.
“This is great news for the city of Red Deer and the surrounding region, as these doctors will play a significant role in providing access to safe, timely surgical care for our residents.”
Anesthesiologists are specialized medical doctors trained in anesthesiology, the field of medicine dedicated to pain relief and the careful management of vital functions such as breathing, heart rate, circulation, body temperature and consciousness. Depending on the surgical procedure, anesthesiologists may administer regional anesthesia to numb a specific area of the body or general anesthesia to ensure the patient is fully unconscious and pain-free throughout an operation.
“The arrival of these anesthesiologists marks a significant step in improving timely access to surgical and emergency care in our community,” said Dr. Adam Hall, facility medical director at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.
“Anesthesiologists are vital to ensuring procedures are safe and efficient, and their expertise will support our ongoing efforts to reduce wait times and improve patient outcomes across central Alberta.”
Trained in Libya, Alsenosy practised in Cape Town, South Africa, prior to coming to Red Deer.
Ramdharee received his medical education University of Pretoria in South Africa, and practised for five years there and briefly in British Columbia before coming to Red Deer.
Simpson completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training in South Africa and has multiple postgraduate credentials from the Universities of Edinburgh, Cape Town and Kwa-Zulu Natal.
He practised in Durban, South Africa, prior to coming to Canada.
Endemann completed his medical degree and University of Pretoria and postgraduate training at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa, where he specialized in anesthesiology.
Hendricks-Bouwer completed her undergraduate studies at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. She obtained her Master of Medicine in anaesthesiology from Walter Sisulu University in South Africa.
Alberta Health Services states it is continuing to recruit physicians across the Central Zone to meet community needs.
“AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees,” AHS stated in a media release this week.
