Rowan University, Virtua Health, Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ), and Cumberland County leadership held a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday celebrating Rowan Medicine’s first clinical facility in Cumberland County. The facility, which is located on the campus of RCSJ, was funded in part by the Cumberland County Commissioners and leased to Rowan Medicine, an affiliate of the Virtua Medical Group.
“This is much more than a brick-and-mortar structure; this project represents the strength in partnership between Cumberland County, Rowan College of South Jersey, Rowan University and Virtua Health,” said Richard Jermyn, D.O., dean of Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM). “Here, we will expand public access to health services and offer innovative opportunities for our students.”
The new facility will house three institutes: the Rowan-Virtua Regional Integrated Special Needs Center (RISN), the Rowan-Virtua NeuroMusculoskeletal Institute (NMI), and the Rowan-Virtua Child Abuse Research Education & Service Institute (CARES), all serving the community with specialized health care services not readily available in Cumberland County.
Joseph Sileo, director of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, expressed his pride in the county’s involvement in the project. “This project not only serves the needs of children and families but also helps students at RCSJ gain practical, hands-on experience. Cumberland County needs more public access to health facilities,” Sileo said. “The Cumberland County Commissioners are happy to support this collaboration and appreciate the efforts of RCSJ.”
Dr. Fred Keating, president of Rowan College of South Jersey, emphasized the facility’s role in addressing local needs and enhancing educational opportunities. “There is a clear need in South Jersey for public access to health facilities and for students to receive education in the field without leaving the region,” Keating said. “This collaboration addresses those needs directly, and we couldn’t have accomplished this much-needed center without the county’s support.”
RCSJ and Rowan-Virtua SOM have previously partnered on the innovative Pathway to Medicine program. The program offers an unprecedented opportunity to Cumberland County high schoolers as it guarantees acceptance annually for five high-achieving seniors into an accelerated, cost-saving pathway to a medical degree.
Dr. Ali Houshmand, president of Rowan University emphasized the importance of connecting communities with health and education. “This facility shows our dedication to bringing much-needed services to Cumberland County and Vineland. We know that opening pathways of opportunity will benefit us all. In order for Rowan to thrive, our community needs to thrive,” he said.
